Iran: French citizen sentenced to 8 years in prison for espionage
Tehran: An Iranian court has sentenced a French citizen to eight years and eight months in prison for spying for 2020.
According to Voice of America, Benjamin Brier, 36, had flown a camera-mounted drone on the Iran-Turkmenistan border and was detained by the Iranian government on espionage charges.
Benjamin’s lawyer, Philip Valent, said the ruling was purely politically motivated and that the trial was a sham. He explained that Benjamin’s case had never been heard in a transparent manner because Benjamin could not even read the indictment against him, which made it difficult to prepare the case.
The lawyer also said that Benjamin had been on a hunger strike for a month and had become very weak.
It should be noted that dozens of citizens belonging to Western countries are still in Iranian custody on various charges.
